OBJECTIVES This course is designed to disseminate the results of water resource research, conducted over many years in Turkey, and in so doing to contribute to improving the staff performance of water professionals. The course will enable the participants to apply and develop their knowledge in water resource management and irrigated agriculture. The course approach will be job-oriented and will be based on group work in workshops. The sessions will be led by Irrigation and Water Resource experts from General Directorate of Rural Services Research Institutes and Universities. CURRICULUM The curriculum is designed to focus on natural resources issues such as soil and water. The course will comprise lectures, fieldwork, technical workshops and site visits to various project areas in the Izmir region. The major topics of the course are as follows. COURSE DETAILS The course will be held from 21st August to 1st September, 2000 at the International Agrohydrology Research and Training Centre, ARTC, Menemen, Izmir, Turkey. ARTC is a purpose-built facility, designed to meet international training and education standards. Menemen itself is located some 35 km from Izmir, which is the third biggest city in Turkey. ARTC is also very close to many famous historical sites such as Ephesus, the house of the Virgin Mary and Pergamon, and provides an excellent setting for learning. The course itself will be fully residential and will be conducted in English. The cost of the course is $650 US inclusive of residential expenses and all field trips. Participants will be responsible for paying their own travel expenses and incidental costs. REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION The course is designed for professionals currently working in the field with government or non-government organizations and the private sector. Delegates should have a B.Sc. or higher degree in agricultural engineering or related disciplines. The number of participants is limited to 20. As an important part of the course, participants will be invited to present their experience of the current general agricultural situation, and specifically their experiences regarding the topic areas of the course from their countries. SCHOLARSHIP ARTC can offer a limited number of scholarships to cover accommodation, catering and course tours. Applicants can apply for a scholarship by completing and returning the attached form to the address on the front page. Application forms should be recieved by the selection committee by 15 June, 2000.
CONFERENCE VENUE The International Agro-Hydrology Research and Training Centre (IARTC) is located at Menemen, near Izmir in Turkey. The Centre, recently built by the General Directorate of Rural Services (GDRS) to international standards, includes full conference facilities, library with "on-line" information system, hotel accommodation with air-conditioned bedrooms, restaurant, health centre and a full range of recreational facilities including a swimming pool. There is a range of additional hotels nearby. The Centre not only affords an excellent conference venue, located within the Mediterranean region, but also offers easy access to a host of leisure opportunities with the coast and sites of major historic interest nearby. These include Ephesus, Foca, Pergammon; the centre of culture in ancient times and Cesme with thermal baths, an art gallery and a 16th century fortress. |
