INTRODUCTION The Second International Conference on GIS for Earth Science Applications will be held in Menemen Turkey by General Directorate of Rural Services (GDRS) and Anadolu University. GIS, being a multidisciplinary subject, has applications in various fieldsranging from geological surveys to environmental problems. The main topics of the conference cover a wide variety of subjects of earth sciences. The conference, therefore will be an opportunity to see and understand the different application of GIS technology, to exchange ideas and experience as well as toput the first brick of the next conferences by the selection of the International Committee. CONFERENCE MAIN TOPICS DEADLINES FOR SUBMITTING PAPERS February 2, 2000 : Last day for submitting abstracts April 30, 2000 : Sending out of letters of acceptance June 30, 2000 : Last day for submission of camera-ready papers SUBMISSION OF THE ABSTRACTS - Abstracts should be 300 to 500 words, written by MS Word 7.0 with 12 points inTimes New Roman and English, - Scope of the work should be clearly defined and the important results should besummarized, - The scientific committee will evaluate abstracts and the results will be send toyour addresses, - The abstract books will be distributed at the registration desk. Instructions for Mounting Posters: - The poster boards measure 120 cm. high by 80 cm. wide. Each poster must have a top label indicating the title, the names of the authors and their affiliations, - Poster material must be prepared in advance and should be large enough to be viewed from a distance of 1 meter. Karimi (University of Pittsburgh) in the subject of ‘Integrating GIS, Satellite Digital Imaginery and GPS’. Please check the registration form, if you want to attend this activity. PUBLICATIONS Proceedings of the papers presented at the conference will be published in ahardbound including a CD in which full papers could be found. REGISTRATION Conference registration will take place in the lobby of the InternationalAgro-Hydrology Research and Training Centre (THAEM). Desks will be open from 17:00 to 20:00 on September 10 and from 09:00 to 10:00 on September 11. Registration Fees
Registration fees include all documents and books, lunches and coffee, teaservices during the conference, welcome cocktail and conference dinner. TOURISTIC TOUR In order to entertain you and your acommpanying persons during your stay in Yzmir, a touristic tour has been organized to Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary and Wine House of Sirince Village. A visit to Ephesus, once a commercial centre of the ancient world, is one of the highlights of any visit to Turkey. The city whose wealth and patronage supported its splendid architectural program was dedicated to the Goddess Artemis. Her enormoustemple, rebuilt several times, dates in its latest form to the third century B.C. and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The ruins also include the theatre, Gymnasium, baths, agora as well as the Library of Celsus. It is recorded that St. John brougth the Virgin Mary to Ephesus after the death of Christ and that she spent her last days in a small house built for her on Bulbuldagi (Mt. Nightingale). Now it is a popular place of pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims, the house has received the official sanction of the Vatican. Sirince Village reflects all beauty of the Aegean Region. Wine House of Sirince Village offers different kinds of wines produced with high quality grapes of Aegean by using traditional methods. GENERAL INFORMATION Visa : The secretariat will issue an official invitation letter to those who have returned the final registration form. With this letter, you can go to the nearest Turkish Embassy or Consulate to apply for entry visa. Weather : The region have a typical Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters.September is a good swimming season of Yzmir and its environments.The average temprature in September is approximately 25 oC. Arrival : For the convenience of the participants special arrangement will be made to meet participants at Izmir Menderes International Airport and transport them to the specified hotels.
