International Agrohydrology Research and Training Center

To provide a focus for international co-operation in land and water research and training in Turkey, the General Directorate of Rural Services has built a new Centre at Menemen near Izmir. The mission of the Centre is to raise levels of sustainable performance in land and water management and so meet client, national and international goals.

The objectives of the Centre are; to identify the constraints that are actually limiting sustainable performance, to develop and test appropriate cost-effective responses to address the constraints, and to guide and accelerate the learning of individuals so that they realise their potential.

     The Centre continues to identify land and water research and training needs. In line with client demands the Centre and its partners are further developing the Centre's capacity to offer relevant programmes and services which include;

     - International collaborative and student-based research opportunities,
     - Continuing professional development short courses and study tours,
     - Parts of internationally recognised postgraduate degree and diploma courses,
     - Tailor-made programmes designed to meet the specific needs of individual clients,
     - International conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops,
     - Technical assistance services leading by national and international experts.

     The Centre has good contacts with research and investment units in the region which are used to site experiments and training activities for effective learning-by-doing under skilled supervision. Study tours are also arranged to other regions in Turkey such as the South Anatolia Project (GAP) area.

     The Centre's facilities have been purpose built to international standards providing a very comfortable learning environment;

     - 232 seated conference hall with three language simultaneous interpreting,
     - audio-visual systems for presentation,
     - library, information system for on-line bibliographic research,
     - two lecture rooms,
     - three seminar rooms,
     - hotel accommodation with 94 air-conditioned bedrooms,
     - 200 seated restaurant, health care centre and mosque,
     - swimming pool, tennis court, games room, billiards, table-tennis, bar, TV room.
